Consultation has concluded

BIRDS of a feather will flock together... in a new bird sanctuary designed to safely accommodate Little Corellas in Murray Bridge.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge is undertaking a pilot program to create the bird sanctuary for Little Corellas as part of a management strategy to minimise their destructive impact, by creating attractive places where they can nest and breed safely.
The Swanport Wetlands has been identified as the most suitable location for the sanctuary.

By creating an attractive habitat for Little Corellas along the riverfront, away from our most vulnerable infrastructure, densely populated and busy areas, we are hoping to find an effective way to live in harmony with the birds.
The large seasonal influx of migrating birds in recent years has caused significant damage to trees, lighting and other Council infrastructure, along with adversely impacting the lives of residents and other native species in the area - which needs to be addressed.
Council has considered a range of management methods and while there are many effective ways to deter the birds, not many work effectively on large flocks over a large area for an extended time – which is what it is hoped the sanctuaries will be able to achieve.
We have engaged experts, including world-renown bird ecologists and biodiversity scientists, to appropriately prepare a sanctuary site to attract Little Corellas and protect the local environment.

This is a trial system for the management of Little Corellas, which is already proving successful in protecting fruit orchards in the Adelaide Hills from Lorikeets and Galahs.

Although humane culling has been used as a short term measure, it is not Council’s preferred management method moving forward.

The success of our comprehensive Little Corella Management Plan is dependent on residents, staff and the wider community, understanding what the plan aims to achieve and supporting those aims.
