The Rural City of Murray Bridge is inviting community feedback on the Italian Monument Project by the Murray Bridge and Districts Italian Association Inc. (MBDIAI).
The monument is a funded gift, including installation, from the MBDIAI as a tribute to the Italian migrants who made their homes in the Murraylands region. The monument will celebrate their enduring legacy and significant contributions through market gardening, logistics, construction, culture and family connection - all of which have contributed to the development of the community’s fabric.
The monument is proposed for installation within an existing garden bed in Linear Park - Adelaide Road. The location has been chosen for its historical significance to the Italian Community, with close proximity to their founding market gardens, family homes and the site of the first Murray Bridge Italian Club.
The monument design has been carefully thought out. The Italian figure will be made of Italian Carrara white marble, shipped from Italy. The marble will be carved in Adelaide by an Italian Stonemason. The base of the monument will be carved from black marble, which will include carvings that represent the migrant’s journey. The figure will face the direction of Italy and the sides of the base will show the journey that many made to start a new life in the Murraylands, South Australia.
This significant project will be funded by the MBDIAI, showcasing the Association’s commitment to recognising their Italian heritage and contribution to our community. The monument, once completed, will be gifted to the Rural City of Murray Bridge and our community.
Community members are encouraged to provide feedback or thoughts on the Italian Monument Project
Following the consultation process, the project is estimated to be completed by June 2025.
