CROQUET players are seeking a new lease for their Murray Bridge clubrooms and greens to secure the future of the sport in the town for the next decade. The Rural City of Murray Bridge is seeking feedback on a proposal for a ten year lease with Murray Bridge Croquet Club Inc, to allow the Club to continue using the Thomas Street clubrooms and greens for croquet activities.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Heather Barclay said the proposed lease would allow some security for the Club, if successful. “We are definitely a sporting community here in Murray Bridge and we like to think there is a place for all sportspeople to be able practise their craft,” he said. “The Murray Bridge Croquet Club has a proud history here, just recently celebrating 110 years. “The Club faced some membership challenges as players began to age out of the sport, but they’ve turned that around, attracted more players and more than tripled their membership in recent years, indicating there is still an appetite for croquet in Murray Bridge.”
Croquet is a game that involves hitting wooden or plastic balls with a mallet through hoops embedded in a grass playing court.
During Winter club members meet at 9.30am for a 10am start, on a Tuesday and Thursday at the Thomas Street clubrooms in Murray Bridge. Everyone in the community is invited to give the game a go with the first four sessions offered free on a come and try basis. The club has mallets and other equipment available for use.
