Consultation has concluded

THE RIVERGLADES wetlands, teeming with wildlife on the eastside of Murray Bridge, have been handed over to the Council, and community members are now being consulted on a plan to safeguard the environmental landmark for future generations.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge consultation on the Draft Riverglades Wetlands Community Land Management Plan is now open.

The Plan was created after land previously owned by local residents was sold to the Council, while parcels of Crown land that also make up the Riverglades, were transferred to the Council’s care and control.

General Manager Infrastructure and Environment Thuyen Vi-Alternetti said the Council took it’s responsibility to safeguard the wetlands seriously.
“The Rural City of Murray Bridge has taken on ownership, along with care and control, of the Riverglades Wetlands at the request of residents, to ensure regular maintenance and conservation for the benefit of the whole community,” she said.
“We want to give residents every opportunity to provide input into the way this significant community asset will be managed and so I encourage everyone to review the Draft Plan and provide feedback by completing the survey.”

The Plan contains strategies for monitoring the water quality, improving native vegetation and fauna, supporting community recreation and increasing environmental awareness about the significance of the wetlands.

Proposals include expanding the network of trails on land and water, improving connectivity, accessibility and enhancing, protecting and restoring local biodiversity and native vegetation.

The Plan supports the establishment of an active river corridor that provides opportunities for accommodation, recreation and tourism.

The Plan also aims to ensure the community is kept safe through fire prevention, animal management and environmental health programs.

Public consultation opens today and will close 5pm Friday 1 March 2024.
